Collectors treat it like a punch card ("I've opened 70 boxes, I'm close!"), a store property ("that location pulls secrets"), or a personal stat ("I'm just unlucky"). It is none of those things. It's a production rate, and once you read it correctly, most of the hobby's mythology dissolves on contact.

This post is the no-folklore version of how rarity works.

What the Ratio Actually Means

A published ratio like 1/144 means that across the production run, roughly one box in 144 contains the secret figure instead of a regular. These are published box ratios — verify on the current packaging, because they genuinely vary: The Monsters (Labubu) series commonly run 6 regulars + 1 secret at a 1/72 class, standard Pop Mart 12-figure series commonly run a 1/144 class, and lines like Sonny Angel publish secret/chase structure per wave.

What the ratio is not:

  • Not a guarantee per N boxes. 144 boxes don't contain exactly one secret. The ratio is an average across production.
  • Not a counter that fills up. Boxes are independent draws. Opening 100 secretless boxes does not make box 101 hotter. The odds have no memory, and they don't owe you.
  • Not a store attribute. The rate is set at the factory, not the till.

How Secrets Actually Get Into Cases

Here's the part that explains most "insider" folklore. Blind boxes ship to retailers in display cases — cartons of a fixed count (commonly 12 for Pop Mart-style lines; check per series). For many series, a case contains a known assortment of regulars. Secrets are inserted at the production/packing level at the published rate, typically replacing a regular figure in the rare case that contains one.

Consequences worth internalizing:

  • Most cases contain zero secrets. At a 1/144-class rate with 12-box cases, the average is one secret per twelve cases. A store can sell case after case without a single secret passing through — no curse required.
  • A case with a secret is otherwise normal. There's no glitter on the carton. Claims of detecting secret-bearing cases by weight or serial are, generously, unproven folklore — and weighing or manipulating sealed boxes at retail to game pulls is the kind of behavior that gets blind-box displays locked behind counters for everyone.
  • Case assortments protect set-builders, not secret-hunters. A published one-of-each case solves duplicates. It does nothing to your secret odds.

The "Lucky Store" Is Mostly Survivorship Bias

Every collecting scene has the legend: a particular shop where secrets happen. Here's the boring truth. Secrets are distributed at a fixed production rate; stores receive sealed cases blind. A high-volume store sells more boxes, so more secrets surface there in absolute terms — and every surfaced secret becomes a post, a story, a legend. The hundreds of secretless boxes sold the same week generate zero posts. You're seeing the hits because hits are the only thing anyone reports.

Could a store's stock be nonrandom in some way? Sure — returns, employee cherry-picking of known assortment positions in lines where box position leaks information, or resealed boxes (which is a fraud problem, not luck). But "this store's vibes produce secrets" is not a mechanism. The fraction on the box is the mechanism. Everything else is narrative.

The same logic applies to "lucky pullers" on social media. Someone opening boxes on camera daily will, on volume alone, pull secrets regularly — at exactly the published rate. You're watching the numerator and the algorithm hid the denominator. And the incentive runs one direction: secret pulls get views, so high-volume openers are effectively paid to keep opening, which manufactures a steady stream of secret-reveal content that makes the odds feel an order of magnitude better than the fraction on the box. Your feed is not a sample; it's a highlight reel curated by an engagement algorithm with no stake in your budget.

So How Should You Actually Pursue a Secret?

Collector to collector, in priority order:

  1. Reframe it. Buy boxes you'd enjoy at their regular-figure value — say, a Labubu or Dimoo series whose whole lineup you like. The secret then becomes what it was designed to be: a rare, delightful accident.
  2. Buy the secret as a single. If you specifically want the secret figure, the secondary market sells checked, verified singles at a known price. That price is almost always lower than the expected cost of pulling one yourself (divide the box price by the pull probability and wince — at 1/144, the expected spend is the price of 144 boxes). Authenticate carefully; secrets are prime counterfeit territory.
  3. Set a budget and let it be boring. Decide your monthly blind-box number before the shelf does. The math never punishes someone who treats secrets as a bonus; it reliably punishes someone who treats them as a target.
